Broads Hidden Heritage: Aerial Perspectives Induction Workshop 7th July 2021

Event date: 7th July, 2021

Broads Hidden Heritage from an aerial perspective

Could you be an aerial archaeologist? Are you interested in discovering the hidden heritage of the Broads using aerial photographs and airborne laser scanning? If so, you might be interested in volunteering for our Aerial Perspectives project. Aerial sources are vital for discovering unknown sites. They can reach parts of the Broads that might otherwise be inaccessible, but the images need to be interpreted. Volunteers will use aerial sources to investigate the Broads landscape and record features of interest.

Volunteering can be undertaken as an individual or as a group/family. No experience is necessary. Support will be provided by a trained aerial archaeologist, with opportunities to ask questions and share information via online catch ups or email. The Aerial Perspectives project has been designed to allow volunteers to undertake their research at home using basic computing software. Four short online workshops in early July will provide training in interpretation and recording. The workshops are open to all and those taking part will not be obliged to subsequently volunteer for the project.

Each participant will be provided with a selection of aerial sources for a 1km2 area of the Broads and will use these to identify any interesting features. Feedback will be given on completed areas, and any significant discoveries will be added to the Historic Environment Record for Norfolk or Suffolk, the definitive record of each county’s archaeological sites and historic buildings.

The second of four induction workshops, this event will be held online using Microsoft Teams between 10:00am to 12:00pm. The event is pre-book only and numbers at each of the four induction workshops will be limited to ten participants, so please book early. If workshops are over-subscribed, we may be able to run additional sessions. If you are unable to book onto a workshop on a day or time that suits you, please let us know, and include your preferred day/time (weekday/weekend; morning/afternoon/evening) as this will help us to plan future sessions).

Please email heritageprojects@norfolk.gov.uk for more information and booking details.
