Wherry Lines Walks: Acle

Walk Length: 3.5 mile circular walk

Getting Started

Begin this Norfolk Trails walk at Acle Station, NR13 3BZ. If you have arrived from Norwich by train, cross the footbridge over the railway tracks and exit the station via the footpath signed to the village.

The Route

The walk begins going through Damgate Wood which is home to a variety of species including water voles in the dykes and the ‘water soldier’ plant, which rises and falls in the water depending on the temperature. Continue to Acle Dyke and walk along the signed Weavers’ Way footpath to meet the River Bure, following the river bank to Acle Bridge. Walk through the grounds of the Bridge Inn to reach the main road and follow the footpath back into the village. For the sharp eye, The Manor House on the corner of the village centre was the headquarters for the home guard for this area during World War Two. See if you can spot its disguised pill box!

There are gates and areas with a slight gradient on the walk. Take extra care crossing the A47 and other busy roads. There are facilities in Acle village centre and opportunities to stop for refreshments at the Bridge Inn and Hermitage inn.
