Twice as much carbon is stored in the world’s peatlands than in its rainforests! Peat underlies 30% of the Broads National Park, storing an estimated 12-14 million tonnes of carbon, and although our local and national peatlands have been used through the centuries it is increasingly important, given the global warming crisis, to protect our remaining peatlands and prevent their stored carbon being released into the atmosphere.
